15 June, KATHMANDU : The government plans to rebuild the country’s oldest college, Trichandra College. The higher education in Nepal started from the very college. Trichandra College, which suffered major earthquakes in 1934 and 2015, is now in a dilapidated condition.
The college was established in 1918 during the regime of the fourth Rana Prime Minister, Chandra Shamsher.
Science education in Nepal also started from this college. Until the opening of a local university in Nepal, the college was affiliated with Patna University. This was the college where Rana family and their close associates studied and was not open to locals until democracy.
In today’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Education Minister Devendra Paudel informed that Trichandra College will be constructed this fiscal year. Earlier, students had protested against the construction of the building.
The students had protested saying that the dilapidated building should be reconstructed with the slogan ‘Save Trichandra’. The Nepal Student Union (NSU) staged a protest on the streets at 9:30 this morning.
Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba also studied at Trichandra College.
